What makes Capella Singapore special?

Capella Singapore is the architecture entry on this list. Foster + Partners, the practice led by Norman Foster, master planned the resort so that two restored 1880s colonial Tanah Merah buildings are absorbed into a sweeping contemporary crescent, and the join between the two is the point of the place. The estate runs to thirty acres of Sentosa hillside, rainforest fringed, with resident peacocks on the lawns, which is a scale no city centre hotel in Singapore can offer. It opened in 2009 and has been trading since without a rebrand. It also has a footnote in modern history as the venue for the Trump and Kim summit in June 2018, which is why the address is known well beyond hotel circles. The wellness offer is the resort's own Auriga Spa, built around lunar cycle treatment rituals rather than a licensed third party brand. Dining sits with Fiamma, the wood fire led Italian restaurant with interiors by Andre Fu, and Cassia for modern Cantonese. Neither holds a Michelin star. What Capella sells is space, design and quiet, at a price that guests debate.

Which room should you book?

Capella Singapore runs 112 keys across the thirty acre estate, and the category you choose changes the hotel completely. There are 72 sea facing rooms and suites in the main crescent, 38 private villas with their own private pool and outdoor shower, two three bedroom Colonial Manors of 436 sqm each, and nine three bedroom Contemporary Manors of 391 sqm. The manors and villas are the reason people come, because a private pool inside a rainforest estate is a genuinely different product from a resort room with a view. The rooms and suites are comfortable and sea facing, but they share the terraced pools with everyone else and they carry the same value scrutiny as the rest of the property. Guests at high rates note there is no complimentary breakfast, which stings more in an entry category than a villa. If the budget stretches to a villa, take it; if it does not, be clear that you are buying the estate and the design rather than a private pool.

Where should you eat and drink?

Capella Singapore holds no Michelin star, and neither Fiamma nor Cassia appears in the MICHELIN Guide Singapore 2025 star list. What Cassia does hold is a One Diamond recognition in the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide 2026, which is a separate guide with separate criteria and should not be read as a Michelin award. Cassia itself is modern Cantonese and the more formal of the two rooms. Fiamma is Italian and wood fire led, with interiors by Andre Fu, and it occupies the space that was previously The Knolls, so older reviews referring to that name are describing a restaurant that no longer operates under it. Bob's Bar handles drinks. The practical caution is that a hilltop estate on Sentosa is not a place you wander out of for dinner, so you will eat on property more often than in the city, and you should check what your rate includes before arrival. Breakfast inclusion is a recurring point of friction.

What is the spa and pool like?

The pools are the structural feature. Three cascading outdoor pools step down the hillside terraces, one of them adults only, and the 38 villas and the manors add private plunge pools of their own. None of this is a skyline infinity pool: the outlook is sea and rainforest, which is the trade Capella asks you to make against a Marina Bay address. Worth knowing before arrival that guests have reported staff failing to brief them on which pool is which, so ask at check in rather than assuming. The spa is Auriga, the resort's own award winning brand, built around lunar cycle treatment rituals instead of a generic menu, and it is a real reason to book rather than an amenity listing. With thirty acres of grounds and peacocks in them, the walk between spa, pool and villa is part of the experience.

Where is Capella Singapore, and how do you get there?

The address is 1 The Knolls, on a Sentosa hilltop, and it is a resort location rather than a city one. Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay are about 20 minutes by car, Orchard Road about 20 to 25 minutes, and Changi Airport about 30 minutes. Central Singapore is roughly 10 to 15 minutes away by road, which sounds close and mostly is. The friction is Sentosa itself. Even sympathetic reviewers describe getting on and off the island as a mild but persistent irritation compared with a city centre base, and it accumulates across a stay if you plan to be out every day. The upside is what the island buys you: rainforest, sea outlook, thirty private acres and no traffic noise, in a country where land is the scarcest luxury there is. Book Capella if the resort is the holiday. Book Marina Bay if the city is.

What do guests consistently say?

The design and the setting are not what guests argue about. Value is. The recurring complaint across reviews is that the rate is hard to justify, and specifically that breakfast is not complimentary at rates well above what most travellers consider a threshold for inclusion, which makes any small flaw feel amplified. Service inconsistency is the second theme, and it lands harder at this price point than it would elsewhere: reported examples include slow room service and staff failing to brief guests on facilities such as the adults only pool. The third theme is logistical rather than qualitative, with even positive reviewers describing the on and off Sentosa journey as a real if minor irritation. Guests who book a villa or a manor, treat the estate as the destination and stay put tend to rate the property far more highly than those who book an entry category and commute into the city each day.
