The Amalfi Coast has three primary towns and several smaller villages. Each produces a different Amalfi experience.
The four primary destinations
Positano
The most-photographed Amalfi town. The pastel buildings stacked on the cliff appear in every brochure.
Atmosphere: famous, busy, iconic. Hotels: Le Sirenuse, Il San Pietro di Positano. Best for: anniversary celebrations, honeymoon, iconic Amalfi experience.
Amalfi
The heritage town that gave the coast its name. More walkable than Positano.
Atmosphere: heritage, slightly less famous, more local. Hotels: Hotel Santa Caterina, Convento di Amalfi. Best for: repeat visitors, traditional Italian luxury, longer stays.
Ravello
The hilltop town 350m above the sea. Most-dramatic setting.
Atmosphere: cultural, refined, peaceful. Hotels: Belmond Hotel Caruso, Hotel Villa Cimbrone. Best for: anniversary celebrations, repeat visitors, dramatic-setting preference.
Praiano
Quieter alternative between Positano and Amalfi.
Atmosphere: smaller, calmer. Hotels: Borgo Santandrea (newer), smaller boutique properties. Best for: weekend escape, design-conscious travel, repeat Amalfi visitors.
How to choose
A specific framework:
- For first Amalfi visit + iconic atmosphere: Positano (Le Sirenuse)
- For dramatic setting: Ravello (Belmond Hotel Caruso)
- For heritage / cultural: Amalfi (Hotel Santa Caterina)
- For privacy / smaller scale: Praiano (Borgo Santandrea)
- For anniversary celebrations: Positano or Ravello
How to combine towns
Three combinations work:
Positano + Capri (1-night day trip)
The most-popular combination. 4 nights Positano + 1-night day trip to Capri by boat.
Positano + Ravello
The most-Amalfi combination. 4 nights Positano + 4 nights Ravello. The variety captures both faces of the coast.
Amalfi + Naples or Sorrento
For travellers wanting cultural depth. 4 nights Amalfi + 3 nights Naples (Pompeii, archaeology).
Practical advice
Three Amalfi-specific points:
Driving
The Amalfi coast road is famously winding. Most travellers prefer trains (Naples to Salerno + boat) over driving.
Parking
There is no on-site parking at most cliffside hotels. The hotel arranges parking 5-15 minutes' walk away.
Stairs
Positano in particular involves significant climbing. Verify accessibility if mobility matters.
Five rules for Amalfi town selection
- Choose town by priority — iconic (Positano), heritage (Amalfi), dramatic (Ravello), quiet (Praiano)
- Avoid driving the Amalfi road; use trains and boats
- Book 9-12 months ahead for peak season (May-September)
- Restaurant reservations are essential for Michelin-starred properties
- Multi-town trips work in 7+ nights
