Forbes 5-Star, Palace de France. Avenue Montaigne, the city's most-fashionable luxury hotel. The Alain Ducasse restaurant has been a flagship for two decades.
9. The Connaught — London, UK
Forbes 5-Star. The senior London business hotel. The Connaught Bar has been awarded the world's best bar three times.
10. The Setai — Miami Beach, USA
Forbes 5-Star, AAA 5-Diamond. The most-discreet luxury hotel in Miami. Smaller-scale than the South Beach competition.

How five-star designations work
Three rating systems carry weight at the five-star level:
Forbes Travel Guide 5-Star
The most rigorous globally. Inspectors stay anonymously, evaluating against 900+ standards. Awards are 5-Star (highest), 4-Star, and Recommended.
Forbes 5-Star is the gold standard. Hotels lose this rating regularly when service slips; gaining it is exceptionally difficult.
AAA 5-Diamond
The American counterpart. Covers North America, Caribbean, Mexico. Inspectors stay anonymously. AAA 5-Diamond is roughly equivalent to Forbes 5-Star in the Americas.
Michelin 3-Key
Michelin's hotel rating, launched 2024. The 3-Key designation is the highest. The system is still finding its calibration.

What five-star service actually means
The real differentiation of five-star is consistency. Five-star hotels deliver reliable service at every interaction. Three specifics:
Reliability across stays
A five-star hotel will deliver the same service standard on a Sunday in February as on a Friday in October. Lesser hotels fluctuate; the Tuesday-morning service is different from the Saturday-evening service.
Reliability across staff
A five-star hotel will deliver the same service standard from the new junior bellhop as from the veteran concierge. Lesser hotels show the seams when individual staff members vary.
Reliability across categories
A five-star hotel's housekeeping, food, spa, restaurant, and concierge all deliver at the same level. Lesser hotels are strong in one area and weak in others.
The standard is not "exceptional" — it is "uniformly excellent". This is harder than it sounds.
What you pay for at a five-star
Three things justify the five-star premium over four-star:
- The infrastructure: 24-hour services, executive lounges, full-service spa, multiple restaurants
- The service: ratio of staff to guests is roughly 2:1 (versus 1:1 at four-star)
- The recovery: when something goes wrong, the five-star compensation framework is meaningful
Travellers who do not value all three of these are over-paying at five-star. Travellers who do value them — business executives, anniversary couples, families with significant logistics — are getting genuine value.
When five-star is not the right choice
Three scenarios where five-star is the wrong choice:
- Boutique-scale travel: a 12-room boutique gives you something a 300-room five-star cannot
- Adventure travel: the lodges, camps, and wilderness properties are categorically different
- Budget-constrained luxury: a strong four-star delivers 80% of the experience for 50% of the rate
Match the type to the trip, not the trip to the type.
A specific note on five-star service recovery
A defining feature of true five-star hotels: when something goes wrong, the recovery is structured and generous.
A normal hotel: an issue produces an apology and partial credit, with delays and friction.
A five-star: an issue produces immediate acknowledgment, an actual fix in real time, additional compensation that exceeds the issue's value, and a follow-up communication after the stay.

Backup capacity
Five-stars maintain back-up suppliers for everything. If the laundry breaks, an alternative is in place. Real cost.
The five-star premium is approximately 50-100% above strong four-star rates. The premium reflects the underlying cost structure, not just brand positioning.
When four-star is enough
Three scenarios where four-star delivers most of the five-star value at significantly lower cost:
- Short stays (1-2 nights) where the recovery infrastructure rarely matters
- Familiar destinations where the booking can be hedged with off-property options
- Pure leisure trips where the upper-tier amenities are not used
For these, the strong four-star (J.K. Place, Le Beaumont, Hotel du Petit Moulin) often delivers the same satisfaction at 50-60% of the rate.
Five rules for five-star hotel selection
- Verify the actual rating (Forbes, AAA, Michelin) — "5-star" without authority is marketing
- Read recent reviews; five-star hotels can decline
- Use Virtuoso or AmEx FHR for amenity packages
- Tip generously — relationships compound at five-star
- The breakfast included is rarely worth the rate; book a la carte if possible
