A real private beach is owned outright by the hotel and accessible only to guests. The picks below are the eight properties where this is genuinely true — not the many that claim "private access" to public beaches.
The eight
1. Soneva Fushi (Maldives)
Entire private island. The "beach" is the island's perimeter — exclusively yours.
2. Jumby Bay Island (Antigua)
Private 300-acre island. The beaches are exclusively for guests.
3. Aman Pulo (Philippines)
Private island in the Cuyo Archipelago. Forty-two casitas with shared beach access exclusive to guests.
4. The Brando (French Polynesia)
Private island. Tetiaroa Atoll. Marlon Brando's former private island.
5. Cap Karoso (Indonesia)
Private peninsula in Sumba. The two beaches on either side are guest-only.
6. Como Parrot Cay (Turks and Caicos)
Private 1,000-acre island. Multiple beaches, all exclusively for guests.
7. Aman Sveti Stefan (Montenegro)
Private islet connected to mainland. The beach is partially exclusive (one side is guest-only; the other is shared with locals).
8. Singita Boulders Lodge (South Africa)
Private 33,000-acre game reserve with a freshwater dam. Not a beach in the conventional sense, but exclusive private water access.
What "private beach" actually means
Three categories of "private beach" claims:
Category 1: truly private (the picks above)
The hotel owns the entire beach. No public access. No other hotels share it. The picks above qualify.
Category 2: private access only (most "private beach" hotels)
The hotel has a private path or gate to a public beach. The beach itself is public — anyone can walk along it. Many "private beach" hotels are this category.
Category 3: reserved beach club (some Caribbean hotels)
The hotel has a beach area reserved for guests within a public beach. Walking 50 metres in either direction takes you to public space.
The first category is rare and expensive. The second and third are common and significantly less expensive. Verify which category before booking based on the "private beach" claim.
Why true private beach matters
Three specific differences:
Photography
A truly private beach is photographable any time. No strangers in the photographs. No litter from public use. No noise from non-guests.
Access timing
Truly private beaches can be used at any hour — sunrise, midnight, late evening. Public beaches close at dusk in many regions.
Service
Truly private beaches have full hotel service — beach attendants, drinks, food, towel changes. Public beaches with hotel access have limited service.
When private beach access matters
Three scenarios where the premium is worth it:
- Honeymoon and milestone celebration trips
- Photography-driven trips
- Trips where peak privacy is the priority
Three scenarios where the premium is not worth it:
- Standard family beach trips (public beaches with hotel access work)
- Short stays under 4 nights
- Trips where beach access is one amenity among many
Five rules for private beach hotel selection
- Verify the beach is truly private (category 1) before booking
- Confirm hotel-side access — the path / boat / golf cart logistics matter
- Check the beach quality independently — private does not mean good
- Ask about service hours on the beach
- Understand the access policy for non-guests (some private islands accept day visitors)
