Annual hotel memberships are the alternative to traditional loyalty programmes. A flat annual fee provides discounted rates, member benefits, and access to private spaces. The picks below are the major programmes; the analysis below shows when they pay back.

The major memberships

Soho House

Annual fee: $2,500-$4,500 depending on home club and category. Benefits: Member access to all 40+ Soho Houses globally. Member rates on Soho House Hotels (typically 15-20% off public rates). Member events and programming. Worth it for: travellers who use Soho House properties 8-15+ times per year.

Equinox Hotels Membership

Annual fee: integrated with Equinox gym membership ($300-400/month). Benefits: Member rates at Equinox Hotels. Hotel access for non-resident members. Worth it for: existing Equinox gym members who travel.

Aman Membership (informal)

No published programme. Aman tracks frequent guests and provides preferential treatment without a formal membership. Worth it for: aspirational; cannot be purchased directly.

Bvlgari Members

Annual fee: invitation-only. Benefits: Member access to Bvlgari Hotels with preferential rates and welcome amenities. Member events. Worth it for: existing Bvlgari clients (jewellery, hotels) who use the brand 5+ times per year.

Rosewood Members

Annual fee: $200/year. Benefits: 20% discount on member rates, $100 hotel credit, complimentary welcome amenity, room upgrade. Worth it for: travellers who use Rosewood properties 3+ times per year.

Belmond Bellini Club (free)

Free programme. Member rates and benefits at Belmond properties. Worth it for: any frequent Belmond guest. The economics are simple.

LHW Sterling Club

Free programme for Leading Hotels of the World. Member benefits at participating properties. Worth it for: travellers using LHW properties.

How to evaluate a membership

Five specific questions:

Question 1: how often will you actually use it?

Calculate trips per year × per-trip benefit. Most memberships pay back through 5-10 stays per year at member rates plus included amenities.

Question 2: do you currently use the brand?

Memberships pay back fastest for travellers who already use the brand. The membership accelerates an existing relationship.

Question 3: are member rates significantly different from public rates?

Run the math. Soho House Hotels member rates are 15-20% below public rates. Rosewood member rates are 20% below public. The percentage matters.

Question 4: are the included benefits genuine?

$100 credits, complimentary breakfast, room upgrades — these have real value when used. Calculate based on actual usage patterns.

Question 5: does the membership grant access you cannot otherwise get?

Soho House membership grants access to spaces that are not otherwise accessible. Rosewood membership does not — non-members can book the same hotels.

The exclusivity-based memberships pay back differently from the discount-based memberships.

When memberships are wrong

Three scenarios:

  • Travellers who use the brand fewer than 5 times per year (the math doesn't work)
  • Travellers who could use a luxury travel agent (Virtuoso, FHR) for similar benefits without commitment
  • Travellers who want flexibility across many brands (concentration is required for memberships)

Five rules for hotel membership selection

  1. Calculate per-trip benefit × annual trips before joining
  2. Match the membership to brand you already use
  3. Compare benefits to luxury travel agent (Virtuoso) alternatives
  4. Free memberships (LHW, Belmond Bellini) are no-risk starts
  5. Paid memberships should pay back through 5-10 trips per year minimum
