Italy is built for road-tripping. The hotels along the way are the trip.

The classic route (10-14 days)

Days 1-3: Rome

Hotel de Russie or Hotel de la Ville. See the city, eat well, then leave by car.

Days 4-6: Tuscany (Florence + Chianti)

Castello di Casole or Castello del Nero. Florence for art, Chianti for landscape, drive between vineyards.

Days 7-9: Amalfi Coast

Le Sirenuse Positano or Belmond Hotel Caruso Ravello. Park the car, take the boat.

Days 10-12: The Lakes (Como or Garda)

Grand Hotel Tremezzo or Villa d'Este. Slow finish, lakeside views.

Days 13-14: Milan or Venice (fly out)

Bulgari Milano or Aman Venice for the last night.

Driving notes

Rental

Pick up at FCO airport. Manual transmissions are common — request automatic explicitly. Italy's autostrada is excellent.

ZTL zones

Most historic centres are restricted zones. Hotels arrange permits or street parking. Don't drive into Florence centre.

Coastal roads

Amalfi Coast road is narrow, winding, and stressful. Many drivers prefer to park at hotel and use boat/taxi for movement.

Pacing

3 nights minimum per major stop. 14 days for the full route. 10 days requires cutting one stop (usually skip the Lakes).

Five rules

  1. Always automatic transmission in rental
  2. ZTL zones — your hotel handles permits
  3. Pre-book stop-over restaurants (Tuscany agriturismo, Positano cliffside)
  4. Park at hotel for Amalfi — boats are better
  5. Two regions over one is the trade — depth beats breadth
