The Swiss Alps have multiple distinct resort towns. Each produces a different alpine experience.

The four primary resort towns

Zermatt

Setting: at the foot of the Matterhorn. Character: car-free village, traditional, family-friendly. Skiing: extensive, including summer skiing. Hotels: The Omnia, Mont Cervin Palace, Riffelalp Resort. Best for: family travel, ski-focused trips, traditional alpine experience.

St Moritz

Setting: high-altitude lake setting in the Engadin. Character: glamorous, social, fashion-conscious. Skiing: extensive, polo on snow, Cresta Run. Hotels: Badrutt's Palace Hotel, Suvretta House, Kulm Hotel. Best for: anniversary celebrations, social winter scene, formal occasions.

Verbier

Setting: south-facing slopes in the Valais. Character: party-skiing, younger demographic, off-piste. Skiing: extensive 4 Vallées system; off-piste mecca. Hotels: W Verbier, Hotel Le Lana, La Cordée des Alpes. Best for: ski-focused trips, younger demographic, off-piste.

Gstaad

Setting: low-altitude village in the Bernese Oberland. Character: traditional, refined, exclusive. Skiing: smaller area; the village is the destination. Hotels: The Alpina Gstaad, Park Gstaad, Le Grand Bellevue. Best for: anniversary celebrations, refined alpine experience, non-skiers.

How to choose

A specific framework:

  • For family ski: Zermatt (car-free, traditional)
  • For glamorous winter: St Moritz (Badrutt's Palace, social scene)
  • For ski-focused: Verbier (4 Vallées, off-piste)
  • For non-skiing alpine: Gstaad (refined village)
  • For anniversary celebrations: Gstaad (The Alpina) or St Moritz (Badrutt's Palace)

When to visit

  • December-March: peak ski season
  • Mid-January: sweet spot (post-Christmas, pre-February school holidays)
  • April: spring skiing, lower rates
  • June-September: summer alpine, hiking-focused

Practical advice

Three Swiss-specific points:

Cost

Swiss Alps are among the most-expensive ski destinations in the world. Build budget accordingly.

Train infrastructure

Swiss trains are exceptional. Most resort towns have direct train access.

Multi-resort options

The Swiss Alps lend themselves to multi-resort trips. Combinations like St Moritz + Zermatt or Gstaad + Verbier work well in 10+ nights.

Five rules for Swiss Alps resort selection

  1. Match town character to trip type
  2. Zermatt is car-free; family-friendly accessibility
  3. St Moritz is the most-glamorous; pack accordingly
  4. Verbier is ski-focused; non-skiers should look elsewhere
  5. Gstaad works for non-skiing alpine; the village is the destination
